While it was on the air, Game of Thrones was the most popular television series in the world. The show had an average viewership of over 32 million in its first seven seasons and in its eighth and final season, which concluded in 2019, it averaged 46 million across US platforms. The show is also the second-most awarded television series in Emmys history, so it only makes sense that HBO would use the show’s popularity and expand its universe. Audiences did not have to go too long without new Game of Thrones content, with the House of the Dragon spinoff debuting in August 2022.

For a lot of people, including myself, Kevin Conroy was the Batman. A lot of you might’ve known him from the Arkham Trilogy—I myself was first introduced to him via Justice League: Unlimited. He was the voice of Batman for over three decades before he died after a short battle with cancer in November last year, age 66.

The WW2 shooter United 1944 struck me as a potentially interesting twist on the genre when I first heard about it back in March. Shooting enemies and capturing control points are mixed with exploration, scavenging, and crafting: You start the game “literally with nothing,” and must dig up resources and plans so you can assemble weapons, fortifications, traps, and other items that will enable you to start fighting in earnest.

Apple has emerged largely victorious in the latest round of a legal battle with Epic Games, which focuses on antitrust laws and the way the App Store is run. Epic’s suit, sparked by various shenanigans around the hugely popular Fortnite, says that Apple’s marketplace violates federal law by banning third parties from using their own payment platforms on the operating system: That is, it’s a monopoly.

The suit began in 2020 after Epic updated Fortnite on iOS with a payment workaround, which would bypass Apple’s usual 30% cut. In response, Apple promptly banned the app. Essentially this is all about the cut the platform-holder is taking from third party developers, and whether those developers should have the right to implement their own payment systems. I’m a big fan of Croteam’s 2014 puzzle game The Talos Principle, and so I think the new Mind-Bending Masterpieces collection at Humble Bundle is well worth some attention. It includes The Talos Principle and an impressive collection of other hit puzzle games including The Witness and Superliminal for just $10.

The Talos Principle is set in humanity’s far future, except humanity has wiped itself out and all that remains are the robots we left behind to carry on our legacy. One of Honkai: Star Rail’s most powerful characters is a literal child. She’s so strong, in fact, that a few brave players found out she can solo some of the turn-based RPG’s hardest battles.

Star Rail, much like Genshin Impact, expects you to have a team of four characters when you enter each fight. Enemies are weak to certain elements, like fire or ice, and you’re supposed to create a team of characters who attack with the same type of damage. But Clara, a young girl with a robot dad, doesn’t have to play by those rules.

The AI arms race is heating up. Adobe is bringing its generative art tool, Firefly, to Google Bard. This will allow Google’s experimental chatbot to generate images based on user prompts, much like OpenAI’s Dall-E tool. 

Adobe Firefly’s beta launched in March. Aside from being your typical text-to-image generator, it allows users to edit images on the fly. Also coming to Bard is Adobe Express, a free photo editing software that’s popular among mobile users because it comes with pre-made design templates you can use to make social posts.

Panos Panay, chief product officer at Microsoft, is leaving after almost 20 years. Executive vice president Rajesh Jha told employees on Monday in an internal memo.

“After nearly 20 years at the company, Panos Panay has decided to leave Microsoft. Panos has had an incredible impact on our products and culture and the broader devices ecosystem,” Jha also mentioned that Panos will be helping with the transition as the company will “double down on our strategy” moving forward.

Panay’s role will be between Mikhail Parakhin and Yusef Mehdi. Mehdi will lead the Windows and Surface businesses, while Parakhin will form a new “Windows and Web Experiences Team.”

With just over three weeks to go before the Fallout TV series hits the airwaves, Amazon has dropped a two-minute clip from the show in which Vault dweller Lucy finds herself caught up in a sticky situation between a gun-slinging ghoul and the Brotherhood of Steel.

The scene opens with the Ghoul—capitalization courtesy of Amazon—playing rough with a couple elderly citizens of a local shantytown. Vault dweller Lucy, played by Ella Purnell and presumably imbued with the spirit of “do good in the world,” intervenes, only to discover that she’s woefully unprepared for the moment. I’ve been having a great time in Nightdive’s System Shock⁠—it’s been one of those “actually having trouble putting it down” games for me. It’s technically impressive too, with great performance and a lightweight install for an Unreal Engine 4 game, but I’ve definitely encountered a few glitches in my playtime.

And every single one I can remember has been taken care of in the game’s first patch since launching on May 30. Counter-Strike 2 seems to have got off to a solid start, but a few weeks after launch Valve has announced some big decisions. These will only affect a small number of players, but even so this is a real line in the sand that reflects the developer’s ambition to develop this game for a decade or more.

“Counter-Strike 2 represents the largest technical leap in CS history,” says a Valve statement, “and our goal is to continue to develop Counter-Strike for years to come.
